Cranswick
has sought to demonstrate high environmental
standards which consistently exceed
the basic requirements of environmental
legislation. The fact that 9 per
cent of the equity in Cranswick
is owned by 'green investors’
is itself a good indication of Cranswick's
high environmental targets.
Objectives
Cranswick operates under the following
broad objectives:
To not only meet, but where possible
exceed, the statutory requirements
for environmental performance.
To meet the highest possible environmental
standards in each sector and, where
relevant, to achieve accreditation
from recognised organisations.
To ensure, as far as possible,
that products purchased from and
services rendered by third party
suppliers meet the same high environmental
standards.
To require all employees to address
environmental responsibilities within
the framework of their normal operating
procedures.
To integrate environmental objectives
into all relevant business decisions.
To minimize waste, seek to recover
as much as is economically practical
and ensure that the remainder is
disposed of responsibly.
To maximize energy by monitoring
and reducing energy consumption
and upgrading technology.

Packaging
With the introduction of the Producer
Responsibility (Packaging Waste) regulations
1997 relevant businesses are now required
to demonstrate that they are contributing
towards the targets set by the UK
National Waste strategy in relation
to the recovery and recycling of packaging
waste. In order to discharge this
each individual business takes steps
to reuse packaging wherever possible
and/or recycle packaging for alternative
uses. In areas of the business where
bulk supply is required Cranswick
often delivers products in loose form,
thus avoiding the need for packaging.
Transport
Cranswick recognizes the environmental
impact of transport in terms of fuel
consumption and CO2 emissions and
therefore aims to ensure the most
efficient use of transport across
the business. Initiatives have been
introduced to reduce the number and
length of journeys. These include
a policy of maximizing loads, combining
trips and carrying out detailed route
planning prior to journeys.
Energy Efficiency
In 1997, the UK agreed a legally binding
commitment under the Kyoto Protocol
to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
A key element to achieving this commitment
is the Climate Change Levy Agreements
(CCLA). Cranswick has introduced a
number of efficiency measures to reduce
both CO2 emissions and energy consumption. |
